Right to switch off; excessive or essential?
A new policy being considered by the government is the “right to switch off”.
Based on policies already in place in some European countries, it is aimed at providing a clear dividing line between work and home life. This follows on from proposed changes to the Employment Rights Bill as mentioned in the King’s Speech.
It is thought that if work/home life balance is defined clearly within company policy, productivity will increase as the employee will be able to rest.
Currently, it is predicted that would be introduced via a “code of practice” which could spark issues for the company if they ever find themselves in an Employment Tribunal where contact outside working hours is included within the complaint.
Companies should keep a close eye on this change as it may require company policy and employment contracts to be updated in line with the new rules.
